Hot climate against borrelia
With spring, the season for ticks has also begun again. The small, black animals transmit a number of diseases. One of them is Lyme borreliosis. According to medical experts, it is the infection that ticks transmit most frequently. Up to 200,000 people suffer from the disease every year, which fortunately is rarely fatal. For us, a good reason to ask whether patients can visit the sauna. We have some surprising answers in store for you.
Lyme borreliosis, what is it actually?
This is an infectious disease transmitted mainly by ticks. It is caused by special bacteria that are transported under the skin by the animals. By the way, most infections proceed without the carriers noticing anything. This is not a problem, because people cannot infect each other with this disease.
The infection only becomes a problem when it causes symptoms. This is the case in about 30 percent of carriers. In most cases, the first symptoms appear on the skin and are easy to recognize: Characteristic red spots form. They appear in the area around the injection site. At first, only a small spot is visible. It slowly spreads outward. Occasionally, other symptoms appear that are easily overlooked by patients. They strongly resemble those of influenza: fatigue, muscle pain and fever. Only rarely do the bacteria affect other organs or even the heart.
How is Lyme disease treated?
Anyone who notices the symptoms in themselves should immediately see a doctor. Although the disease is not life-threatening, it must still be treated immediately. The physician will mostly prescribe the use of antibiotics. They are able to successfully fight the bacteria. In the vast majority of cases, the patient can take the treatment at home. Hospitalization is necessary only if the general condition is severely reduced. In this case, old people and small children are particularly affected. In most cases, however, the patients are put on sick leave for some time. Exactly how long is determined by the attending physician.
Unfortunately, an effective vaccination has not yet been developed. There is also no immunization. People who have already successfully fought Lyme disease can fall ill again at any time.
And what about the sauna?
If you are already guarding the home because of this infection, you can use the time for relaxation, right? And how better to do that than with an extended day in the sauna. Nothing stands in the way of that. If you are suffering from an infection, but have no other symptoms, you can go into the pleasant warmth.
You may even accelerate the healing process. After all, you sweat a lot in the sauna. It is well known that the body gets rid of a number of harmful substances with its sweat. This also includes bacteria that cause diseases. In this respect, scientists who deal with natural healing methods believe that the sauna visit is even conducive to healing. However, you should not rely on the heat alone – and always put yourself in the hands of a traditional physician.
Infrared cabin against borreliosis
You can even speed up the healing process a bit more violently. Why don’t you sit in the infrared cabin instead of the sauna? Here, infrared rays act directly on the body – and the sweat production is immense. The more sweat you lose, the more pollutants also leave the organism. This connection is undisputed in science.
The gentle heat from infrared radiation has another advantage: it has a very gentle effect. This means that you can use the cabin even if your health is not completely up to par.
Better to stay in bed if you have a fever
However, if you also suffer from fever, you should not visit either the sauna or the infrared cabin. In this case, the heat from both sources would be too much of a strain on your body.
