Digital Detox in the Sauna Oasis: Why the Smartphone Should Stay Outside

Taking a sauna is a millennia-old tradition that serves both relaxation and physical health. But in our digital age, the question is becoming increasingly relevant: Is the smartphone allowed in the sauna facility?

The hidden dangers for your smartphone in the sauna

The world of technology is fascinating, and nothing demonstrates that as clearly as our beloved smartphones. These small, powerful devices were designed to accompany us through everyday life. But not all places are equally friendly to them, and saunas are definitely at the top of the list of no-go zones for smartphones.

Imagine the heat in a sauna. While our skin enjoys the warm tingling sensation and temperatures of 80 to 100 °C (176 to 212 °F), it’s a very different story for a smartphone. Most of them are designed for a temperature range between 0 °C and 35 °C (32 / 95 °F). When this limit is exceeded, their batteries are at risk, which can affect their performance. And in the worst case? Total failure cannot be ruled out.

But heat isn’t the only problem. Many of us pride ourselves on the fact that our smartphones are waterproof. But don’t be fooled: “waterproof” doesn’t necessarily mean “steam proof”. The high humidity in a steam sauna presents an entirely different challenge. The steam is sophisticated enough to penetrate even the smallest openings of our smartphone and cause damage.

So, on your next visit to the sauna? It’s best to leave your smartphone outside. Better safe than sorry!

Why your smartphone should stay out during your next sauna visit

The next time you go to the sauna, you might think about taking your smartphone with you to take some photos for your social media channels or listen to your favorite music. But you should reconsider.

First, it’s about privacy. Public saunas are usually places where photography is strictly prohibited, and for good reason. Even if you don’t intend to take photos, just the presence of your smartphone can make other guests uncomfortable. They might feel their privacy has been violated, which is an absolute no-go in such a relaxed setting.

And then there’s the very purpose of the sauna: relaxation. If a cell phone suddenly rings, a message sounds, or even music blares from the speakers, it can significantly disrupt the atmosphere. Saunas are places of silence and meditation where you want to relax and switch off from everyday life. Your smartphone can do just the opposite and destroy the peace for you and other guests.

The sauna is a place to switch off – and that applies not only to you, but also to your smartphone!

Use the sauna for a short digital detox

For many, sauna visits are more than just a relaxing ritual. They are a gift to the body and mind, a moment to truly switch off and regenerate. The heat relaxes our muscles and promotes circulation, giving us a sense of renewal and vitality. But in our connected world, there is one temptation that can disrupt this healing process – the smartphone.

You may have heard of the term “digital detox.” This is a conscious decision to disconnect from the digital world for a while in order to ground yourself and regenerate spiritually. And what better place for such a detox than a sauna? In the environment of a sauna, where every drop of sweat carries with it the tension of the day, the constant buzzing, ringing and vibrating of a smartphone can seem very out of place.

So a visit to the sauna is the perfect time to forget about all notifications, calls and distractions for a while. This moment of tranquility, away from the digital world, can do wonders for our minds. It gives us the rare opportunity to really focus on ourselves and our well-being.

So the next time you decide to visit the sauna, leave your smartphone behind. Immerse yourself in the soothing effects of the sauna and enjoy a short but refreshing digital detox. Your body and mind will thank you!
