The best care tips for your sauna towels

Tips for the best care of your sauna towels. Sauna towels should be properly cared for and washed, because through use in the sauna cabin, these textiles are exposed to very special influences. And this should also be reflected in the optimal care of sauna towels. Sauna towels should be colorfast, otherwise unsightly discolorations on the wood of the sauna can already occur during use in the sauna cabin.

In addition, sauna towels that are not colorfast will also cause unsightly discoloration of other laundry items unless the towels are machine washed using a separate cycle. Hygiene is a very important factor in the optimal care of sauna towels. In the warm and humid environment of a sauna room, pathogens can multiply explosively, so the risk of infections would increase if sauna towels are not optimally cared for.

Always follow the care instructions on the textile labels of sauna towels

Sauna towels should therefore be treated and cared for appropriately after each use. Dirt, bacteria and even traces of sweat can only be reliably removed from sauna towels at a washing temperature of 60 °C (140 °F). If sauna towels are textiles that can also be washed as a boil wash, a 90°C (194 °F) wash cycle is also highly recommended. At this comparatively high temperature, pathogens are reliably killed. Each sauna towel has a textile label, the corresponding instructions for optimal care should always be followed. This way, the sauna towel will remain nice and soft and absorbent for a long time.

Dry sauna towels completely after each wash cycle

Many sauna towels are decorated with additional ornaments or embroidery. To avoid damaging or fading these, such towels should be washed at no more than 40 °C (104 °F). Adding a hygiene rinse to the wash cycle is recommended. Before their next use in the sauna, the towels should always be dried completely, preferably in the fresh air.

This drying process also ensures that pathogenic germs die off. White sauna towels can be washed with full detergent without hesitation; at low temperatures, a bleaching agent can also be added; this not only kills germs, but also lightens the color.

Ironing of sauna towels is not necessary

Colored sauna towels can be cleaned with color detergents. The use of fabric softeners, however, is not recommended, because the resulting protective film on the textile surface reduces the absorbency of sauna towels. As a home remedy and alternative to chemical fabric softeners, clear household vinegar can also be used, but not vinegar essence, which would be too concentrated and could damage both the washing machine and the textiles. Ironing of sauna towels is usually unnecessary, especially towels made of pure cotton could lose considerable absorbency.

Conclusion

Proper care of sauna towels is crucial for their longevity and hygiene. Color fastness prevents discoloration on sauna wood and other clothing. After each use, towels should be washed at a sufficient temperature to remove dirt and bacteria. Follow label care instructions to maintain softness and absorbency. Complete drying, preferably in fresh air, eliminates germs. Ornaments require gentler treatment and should not be treated with fabric softeners. Ironing is usually not necessary to maintain absorbency. Proper care ensures maximum hygiene and comfort every time you visit the sauna.
